Sunday School Lesson February 19, 2012 HEIRS TO THE PROMISE Scripture: Galations 3:15-18, 4:1-7 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] here’s an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or amend an irrevocable agreement, so it is in this case. 16 God gave the promises to Abraham and his child.[b] And notice that the Scripture doesn’t say “to his children,[c]” as if it meant many descendants. Rather, it says “to his child”—and that, of course, means Christ. 17 This is what I am trying to say: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise. 18 For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God graciously gave it to Abraham as a promise. 1 Think of it this way. If a father dies and leaves an inheritance for his young children, those children are not much better off than slaves until they grow up, even though they actually own everything their father had. 2 They have to obey their guardians until they reach whatever age their father set. 3 And that’s the way it was with us before Christ came. We were like children; we were slaves to the basic spiritual principles[a] of this world. 4 But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. 5 God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children.[b]6 And because we[c] are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.”[d]7 Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child.[e] And since you are his child, God has made you his heir, Commentary by Dr. Kalas Most of the Galatians were Gentiles and Paul was telling the GalatianChurch that their redemptionin Christ was just as sure as that of the Jews.Paul met Jesus on the road to Damascus and from that time forward his theme was that their redemption was in Jesus. We no longer see people as Jew or Gentile because we are all one. If we truly believe this, we will be free from arrogance because of any position, or wealth or achievement we may have. And for all who may be of another belief we must remember that everyone still has that potential to become a believer.

IN THE FULNESS OF TIME Paraphrase, Dr. Kalas Paul was trying his best to leave no question unanswered. In Paul’s day there was a clear distinction between childhood and adulthood. On the first Sabbath after a boy’s 12th birthday, he was taken to the synagogue where he was declared a man and was now responsible for himself before God. While we know thatthe law does not save us, God knew that we needed it to know the boundaries of what was right and wrong. Paul said that Jesus Christ came in the fullness of time. That is a philosophy in itself. It suggests that there is a purpose in what is happening in the world. It tells us that the calendar is not just a succession of days, but ongoing steps toward specific and meaningful events in time. Just as we humans invest our money, plant our seeds in the ground, educate ourselves and vote for specific things to happen, God’s Spirit also broods and works. Sometimes we work against God’s purposes. Sometimes when we are at our best we work with Him. But day after day in thehuman realm and in the Spiritual realm the process goes on. And we await one more great event unknown as yet, when Jesus will return.. History helps us to see this. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. About 2000 years later, all people on earth were evil except one family. God wiped the slate clean by sending the flood and saving Noah’s family to repopulate the earth. And God said that the earth would never again be destroyed with a flood and gave the rainbow as a promise sign. As the earth replenished many years of history took place before the moment unique in history took place. When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son born under the law in order to redeem those born under the law. And while we may envy those great characters of history before Christ they did not receive the promise. We today live in the blessing of this time. What happened? First God sent his Son. That tells us He was preexistent. John 1:2 tells us Christ was in the beginning with God. Heavenly. Then Jesus was born of a woman, making Him also a child of this earth, born as we all are. Born under the law, but sinless in order to redeem those who were born under the law, so that we might receive our adoption as God’s children. Why do we need to receive adoption?Because like prodigals, we have wandered from home and when we return to God we are legally brought back into His family. Because of Jesus we are no longer under the law, and though it reveals to us our need, we are now under Grace. By Grace are ye saved through faith. Ephesians 2:8

The Bible was written by the Holy Spirit through 40 men over a period of about 1600 years. The Bible is the Book of Salvation and Jesus Christ is the Only Saviour under Heaven given amonghuman beings whereby we may be saved. Scholars estimate that the 66 books of the King James version of the Bible were written by some 50 different authors. The Bible devotes some 500 verses on prayer, less than 500 verses on faith, but over 2000 verses on money and possessions. According to statistics from Wycliffe International, the Society of Gideon’s, and the International Bible Society, the number of new Bibles that are sold, given away, or otherwise distributed in USA is about 168,000 per day. Gabriel, Michael, and Lucifer are the three angels mentioned by name in the Bible. 49 foods are mentioned and 7 suicides. Voltaire, the French philosopher, an atheist, threatened that he would see to the destruction of the Bible and its removal from the face of the earth. What happened is that the Bible Society bought the house where he was born after his death and today that building is one of the biggest sales centers of the Bible.
PRAY ABOUT THIS (Gateways is an organization organized to better education and to make teachers and parents aware of the ways that are legal to keep the message of God in the schools. Eric Buehrer) In January in California a new law, the so called “Fair Act” law went into effect. It requires elementary schools to include the “study of the role and contributions of …lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. .. with a particular emphasis on portraying the role of these groups in contemporary society. The mission of Gateways is to keep God in our schools. There are many ways that this can be done of which teachers were not aware. Teachers are helped to understand how they can teach about the Bible and Christianity, how religion can be expressed legally and the importance of students understanding America ’s spiritual foundation. HELPING TO SAVE THE WORLD February Guidepost Magazine
Alison Thompson has been to nearly every place on the Globe doing volunteer work and lists these 5 places where help is needed most! Sri Lanka, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Haiti, Your own Town . She grew up in Australia the daughter of a Pastor father and her mother a nurse. Then she worked as a nurse’s aide at her mum’s hospital. She came to America and was a free- lance filmmaker. The morning of 9/11, she rollerbladed with a backpack loaded with first aid supplies and a bottle of perfume (for the stench) downtown to see if she could help. As the secondtower collapsed, she dove under a UPS truck for cover. In the sooty darkness she emerged, said a prayer asking God for strength and rollerbladed into a new role: passionate volunteer. “I wasn’t a doctor or a nurse. I just helped. That is what volunteering is about. The people who really needed help were the rescue workers. We cleaned their eyes of the dust and ash.One worker was crazed with exhaustion. He didn’t want to stop. I held his hand and smoothed his hair until he fell into a gentle sleep. Here I learned skills I never knew I had. When the Tsunami devastated parts of Asia. I just had to go. My experience at ground level in New York had taught me that when you are meant to do something help will come. I was broke but I was given money, tickets, medical supplies and even pills. We flew into Colombo, Sri Lanka, met up with some other volunteers and headed for the coast. We stopped at a small village. Starving people sat everywhere. 10 days into the tsunami and no sign of aid. Childrenswarmed around us begging for asip of water. I prayed send every spare angel to this place. I had planned on being there for two weeks. I stayed 14 months. You do what you canwith what you’ve been given. We organized a makeshift hospital and an open air soup kitchen. We cleaned the wells for fresh water. We buried the dead. We played with the children. It sounds like so little. It is so much. It will take years for them to recover. I amproud that we helped establish an early warning system so if danger appears in the future people can be alerted with sirens and loud speakers. The day that I read the above story a letter came from Sri Lanka. The missionary Pastor had just received a small check and wrote, “Praise God, the money came at a very important time. Last Sunday we saw two infants left near the door when we got up in the morning. Quickly we took them in and kept one of our believers to look after them“ They just take care of them there is no govt. agency to help.
LIKE THE MASTER In his his book, Living with Fire,* Sidney Martin reminisced about visiting a neighboring Church of Scotland in Glasgow, to hear the great orator, Dr. J. G. Gossip. In his sermon that evening Dr. Gossip graphically imagined the triumphant entry of the people of God into heaven on the last day. He described the procession of people from every age in history, every language and every race walking joyously past the angels who lined the streets. In hushed voices the bewildered angels said to one another, “How like the Master they all are!” When The Saints Go Marching In
LIKE THE MASTER More like the Master I would ever be, More of His meekness, more humility; More zeal to labor, more courage to be true, More consecration for work He bids me do. Refrain Take Thou my heart, I would be Thine alone; Take Thou my heart, and make it all Thine own. Purge me from sin, O Lord, I now implore, Wash me and keep me Thine forevermore.
More like the Master is my daily prayer; More strength to carry crosses I must bear; More earnest effort to bring His kingdom in; More of His Spirit, the wanderer to win.
More like the Master I would live and grow; More of His love to others I would show; More self denial, like His in Galilee, More like the Master I long to ever be. -Charles H. Gabriel-1906
HEAVEN, WHAT WILL IT BE LIKE According To The Bible THE Bible gives us a more complete picture of heaven than we might guess. We first learn about a place called heaven back in Genesis 14:19 where it is said, Blessed be the God of Abram, possessor of Heaven and earth. In Exodus 20:22 we read, “Ye have seen that I have talked to you from heaven” In Chronicles 7:14 we read in part where God said- If the people would repent then He would hear from heaven. In Psalms 121:2we read where David praised Godby saying that his help came from the Lord who made heaven and earth. Then in Luke Jesus acknowledges that there is a place called heaven in the Lord’s prayer by saying, “Our Father which art in heaven.” We need to remember that John is only the messenger in the book of Revelation. The message is from Jesus. Chapter 1, verse 1 says. The Revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave unto Him to show His servants things which must come to pass and He sent it by His angel to His servant John. The Living Bible tells it this way: God permitted Jesus to reveal these thing unto His servant John in a vision. And then an angel was sent from heaven to reveal the vision’s meaning and John wrote it down. One meaning of heaven is that which is above, high not low, noble not common, celestial not earthly. The Bible tells us it is the abode of God, it is where Jesus came from, it is where He ascended to. Among other things the Bible also tells us we will have a new kind of body when we get to heaven. Some will have authority there because of faithfulness. It will never end and it will be large enough for everyone. It is like a cube. The Bible says its length, and breadth and height are equal, 1500 miles each way. It is a place of joy where there will be no tears nor the sound of crying. Revelation 21:4; 7:17. Heaven will have a beauty beyond our imagination. The best John could do to describe heaven was to say it was like an entire city of transparent gold. He says: The walls of the new city are precious jewels. The 12 gates are 12 single pearls. The city itself and its streets are pure gold,. The whole city is lighted by the glory of God and of the Lamb. Heaven will be a place of fellowship. Jesus said, "I go to prepare a place for you. I will come again and receive you unto myself… that where I am there you will be" (John 14:3). Heaven will be a place of joy and productive work.Jesus said, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work" (John 5:17). It is a place of matchless blessings. Jesus has prepared a mansion for us there. Best of all, heaven with God and Jesus will be a place of love. Those spirits who have hungered and have thirsted to humbly live with God; those with pure hearts; those who have willingly endured persecution; and those who have lived for God's peace, will live together in life and love forever and ever. -Partly from End Time Prophecy
