SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON
JESUS AS SERVANT

  July 20, 2008
Lesson Background
John 13:1-20
Time:64-90 A.D       Place: Jerusalem

Key Verse: Jesus said, “I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done unto you.” John 13:15
Purpose:To see that in  washing his disciples’ feet Jesus  modeled the humble service required of His followers.
In the teacher’s quarterly is told the story of  Bishop Marshal Reed  who was elected to bishop in 1948 in
the
Detroit area. Because at that time there was no limit to the length of time a bishop could serve, he served until 1964 until he retired.

Bishop Reed was known for his willingness to travel among  the charges under his care.  He was willing to preach to the smallest congregations because he valued every one of his charges. On one of his local church visits he came upon a young pastor  who was setting up folding chairs for the reception  that was to follow the service.  The pastor muttered to the bishop, “I certainly look forward to the day when I finally get a large enough church so  that I don’t have to be setting up chairs anymore.”

Bishop Reed smiled and said, “Yes, that would be nice. I never served a church that large myself.”  Our prestige should never lesson our servant hood. I do not think we have ever had a bishop visit our church once in 20 years. The willingness of Jesus to wash his disciples feet is an example of love to show us that no task is beyond our dignity in the service of God.

OUR MEMBERS
AND OTHERS
Mary Mitchell has been busy. She had the opportunity to visit the new senior facility on Argyle Street
in Sandusky which she said is beautiful. Earlier in the week she visited at the Medical Facility on behalf of our class, Nina Watson, who at 97 is very alert. She also visited, Norma Radloff who needs our prayers and Rhea’s sister Laura Beaver. Thanks Mary.
Don’t forget that at this evening there will be a gospel sing at the fairgrounds.
Gerry’s Geranium at left.

 Spirituality ~

THE ROSE WITHIN

There is a parable told of a man who planted a rose. He nurtured it carefully and watered it faithfully.  Before it blossomed he was examining it one day and noticed all the thorns.

He saw a bud that would soon blossom. He also saw all the thorns, and he thought, “How can any  beautiful flower come from a plant burdened with so many sharp thorns?” Saddened by this thought, he neglected to water the rose and before it was ready to bloom, it died

So it is with many people.  Within every soul, there is a rose. The “God-like” qualities planted in us at birth, growing amidst the thorns of our faults.  Many of us look at ourselves and see only the thorns, the defects, the flaws, the imperfections.  We despair, thinking nothing good can possibly come from us.  So we neglect to water the good qualities within us, and eventually they wither and die. Our potential  is never realized.
Have you ever looked at someone and saw the rose within they cannot see. They have to be shown. It takes
someone else to show it to them.  One of the greatest gifts a person can possess is to be able to reach past the
thorns and find the rose within others.  This is the truest, most innocent, and gracious characteristic of love, to know another person, includeing their faults, and recognize the innate goodness of their soul. If we show them the rose, they will conquer the thorns. Only then, will they blossom.  Our duty in this world is to help others, by showing them their roses and not their thorns.  It is then that we achieve the love we should feel for
each other.  Only then, can we bloom in our own garden

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
1. How many steps does the guard take during his walk across the tomb of the Unknowns and why?
21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.
2. How long does he hesitate after his about face to begin his return walk and why?
21 seconds for the same reason as answer number 1
3
. Why are his gloves wet?
His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle.
4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time and if not, why not?
He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his  march across the path, he executes an about face and moves
the rifle to  the outside shoulder.

5. How often are the guards changed?
Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day,  365 days a year.
6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?
For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be between  5' 10" and 6' 2" tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30."  Other requirements of the Guard: They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of their lives. They cannot swear in public for the rest of their lives and  cannot disgrace the uniform {fighting} or the tomb in any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn. Guards must
obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up their pin. Shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud
click as they come to a halt. There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror. The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV.  All off duty time is spent study-ing the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington Nat-ional Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred Among the notables are:  Medal of Honor winner Audie Murphy, {the most decorated soldier of
WWII}. Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty. They must apply from the 3rd  Infantry.

Help end world hunger
HELP TO FEED THE HUNGRY
FREE OF CHARGE AND
LEARN AT THE SAME TIME.
If you have a computer just click on FreeRice.com below and start. It is a word game. For each word you get correct, 20 grains of rice are donated through the UN World Food Program, and their website says they are proud to be a part of this program to help provide life saving food to the world’s hungry. When Snopes the Hoax watchdog was asked if rice was really donated, their answer was YES. The site is family friendly and the more you play the more you learn and the more you give. Even if you do not have a computer tell those you know who do, how they can help.
A part from the actual amount of rice generated, FreeRice is a fantastic way of spreading the message about world hunger.
Started in October of 2007 in the first 6 months 25 billion grains of rice were generated for the world’s hungry. How many ton is that? 2000 grains = 1oz..
Because of the enthusiasm, especially among students and teachers, the word-learning game has been enhanced so that more school children can expand their vocabulary as they help feed the world’s hungry. It now has an audio function allowing players to hear how words are pronounced, and to allow those who visit the site to select the difficulty level they start at. John Breen, the originator has also called in a team of lexographers to expand the game’s database of 10,000 words. Even kids in college are competing for the highest score.
The site is paid for by advertisers on the site, and Bangladesh , Uganda , Cambodia are recent rice recipients.
